Walking the Ancient Path: Our Gentle and Intentional Eighth-Grade Start


There is something special about the first day of a new homeschool year. Fresh notebooks, sharpened pencils, and carefully chosen books remind us that another chapter is about to begin. This year is especially meaningful as we step into eighth grade—a season filled with growing independence, deeper conversations, and new opportunities to discover God's faithfulness through every lesson. While our plans are carefully laid, we know that the greatest goal is not simply academic success, but hearts that grow in wisdom, character, and a love for the Lord. We invite you to join us as we begin another year along the Ancient Path, trusting God to guide each step of our homeschool journey.


Balancing the Feast and the Rhythm: Our First-Day Routine

Our first morning doesn't begin with a strict schedule, but with a celebration. We kick off the day with a special breakfast completely chosen by the kids. Gathered around the table, we start our morning basket routine with a hymn study using Happy Hymnody, anchoring our hearts in praise before the books even open.

As the day transitions to lunchtime, we keep our minds focused outward. While we eat, we listen to the Unlocked youth Bible study, turning a simple meal into an intentional time of spiritual reflection and discussion.

Easing In and Getting Cracking

The rest of our first day is all about introduction and preparation. Instead of diving headfirst into intense grading, we spend our hours getting familiar with our new curriculum. We will:
  • Explore new textbooks and syllabi.
  • Log into online classes and portals.
  • Set up binders and digital workspaces.
  • Test login credentials and software.

While we believe in easing into the school year gently, we also have a practical motivation to get moving. August brings intense heat, making it the perfect time to stay indoors and tackle our lessons. By getting cracking now, we build a solid academic buffer. When the crisp, beautiful 🍂 🍁 fall weather finally arrives, we can freely step away from our desks and enjoy the outdoors without falling behind.

Overall, our first day back was a great success. The twins even told their father that they had fun! .....and that means we did something right. ( ◜‿◝ )♡
